Effective Storytelling Tips and Suggestions

Telling stories is one great way to entertain people, make them discover new things, or simply get your message across before your little girl goes to sleep or as part of a school or company activity. Storytelling requires communication and people skills for it to be effective. People who tells stories are usually seen as more interesting people, so it is a good skill to practice.

It all starts with choosing the story. Firstly, try to choose a story that is interesting to you. It will be harder to effectively tell a story that you do not find interesting yourself. Choose a story that you know will be interesting for you all the way to the end. Your natural enthusiasm will shine through when you are telling a story you enjoy.

It is important to keep your tone and pace of voice as natural as possible. You can change your tone and voice for different characters.

Watch your body language and make it in synch with your words. Pay attention to your facial expression as well so the level of excitement and happiness can be heard in your voice and seen in your face, and other feelings can be heightened as well. Maintain occasional eye contact and you can also act out certain parts to give the story more dramatic effect. What you tell and how you move should be done with proper timing.

Be sure to practice and rehearse at least a few times before you tell the actual story. Sometimes rehearsing out loud will allow you to catch mistakes or areas of the story that can be improved. The more you tell a story, the better you will get at it, whether it is a children’s story or just a story that you are telling to a friend about something that happened in your life.

Storytelling is a great hobby or a family bonding activity. If you are into storytelling, you can encourage others to do it as well or you can give books as Christmas gifts or wedding bookmarks or baptism bookmarks as favors whenever you have or organize a similar event. You can do your share in keeping fairytales and bible stories a part of everyone’s life through effective storytelling techniques.
