Your Own Handcrafted Keychain

Making keychains is easy and you will need only a few items. Your own handmade keychains will do well for personal use or as gifts. People definitely appreciate receiving keychains because despite its size, it helps a lot in organizing keys and in keeping them safe as well.

For the materials, you will need aluminum foil, a toaster oven, a string or key ring, and depending on the type of keychain you want, you can either use a transparent paper or a small cut out piece of a cake pan according to the size of keychain you want. If you will use a transparent paper, cut it into a size that’s six times larger than the actual keychain you want. Don’t worry as this will eventually shrink when it is placed in the oven. Use the thicker plastic shrinky dink paper rather than thin transparency film.

When you have the required shape of the keychain, get your permanent markers and write your message, quote or name on either side of the keychain. You can also use both sides if you prefer. Avoid using other writing materials and just use permanent markers. If you want different colored fonts, there are colored permanent markers available. Other writing materials such as crayons will melt and fade during the heating process.

After that, place the foil in the oven and place your keychain on top of it. Allow the keychain to bake for 2-5 minutes. After 2-5 minutes, you can either safely remove the keychain from the oven using thongs, or you can leave the toaster oven door open for a few minutes for it to cool before you remove them from the oven.

When cooled, you can now punch a small hole and place the keyring or string. Your keychain is now ready for use and you can make as many as you want. Your keychain is now more unique and less expensive than the ones you see in malls.

Just like any arts and crafts activity, you can make your own keychains and have them for personal use or eventually you can make it as a source of added income. You will never run out of keychain designs and special celebrations where you can sell them. You can have Mother’s Day keychains, hobby or sports themed keychain, wedding keychains as party favors, or baptism keychain favors. You can get different ideas and inspiration from these occasions and come up with different styles every time.
