Suggestions for First Dance Songs

Songs played during the wedding help make the event extra special and meaningful. Whether it’s music during the ceremony, or the background music during the reception dinner or the giving away of the wedding favors, the choice of songs is instrumental in bringing the romance and love to a greater height.

Most evidently, the song during the first dance is truly important as everyone will truly be attentive while both of you dance your way around the reception hall. For you and your groom, this song shouldn’t make you more nervous or bring more jitters than you already have. This song should all the more bring you to a ‘happy place’ and let you relive each moment you are together.

Here are some suggestions for the first dance song:

"You Are My First, My Last, My Everything" (Barry White)

"Endless Love” (Diana Ross & Lionel Richie)

"The Rose” (Bette Midler)

"Just The Way You Are” (Billy Joel)

"Heaven” (Bryan Adams)

"Take My Breath Away” (Berlin)

"You're The Inspiration” (Chicago)

"Embraceable You” (Nat King Cole)

"Can't Help Falling In Love” (Elvis Presley)

"She's Got A Way” (Billy Joel)

"Our Love Is Here To Stay” (Billie Holiday)

"Tonight And Forever” (Carly Simon)

"The Best Is Yet To Come” (Frank Sinatra)

"At Last” (Etta James)

“Somewhere” (from West Side Story)

“As Time Goes By” (from Casablanca)

"The Way You Look Tonight” (Frank Sinatra)

"Unforgettable” (Nat King Cole)

"Some Enchanted Evening” (from South Pacific)

"So This Is Love” (James Ingram)

"Beautiful In My Eyes” (Joshua Kadison)

"Grow Old With Me” (Mary Chapin Carpenter)

Devoted to You – The Everly Brothers

"If I Loved You” (from Carousel)

"Will You Marry Me?” (Vonda Shepard)

"When I Fall In Love” (Nat King Cole)

"From This Moment” (Shania Twain & Brian White)

"Wedding Song (There is Love)” (Petula Clark)

"Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You” (Roberta Flack & Peabo Bryson)

"Marry Me” (Neil Diamond & Buffy Lawson)

"Kiss From A Rose” (Seal)

Wonderful Tonight – Eric Clapton

During this part, the couple gets to whisper sweet nothings to each other so you may opt to have a soft song choice. You can also check out wedding compilation albums for other songs that you may fancy. It is even better if you have a relative or a friend who can compose an original song for you. You can use this original song and you may even have it sung live during the wedding for a more dramatic and lovely appeal.

How To Create Playlists for Your Wedding

Music, in any situation, sets the whole mood in the room. Even when you are personally listening to music on your iPod, your choice of music or your playlist complements your mood. So more notably at special occasions, music can create the atmosphere or create the mood that you would want the group to have.

During weddings where the mood is romantic in itself, you may want to support that with complementing music as well. Especially when there are mishaps in the event, as people may be irritated when the ceremony takes too long or the food takes too long to be served, music can either distract or elevate the mood instead. As you may have songs in mind already, here are some essentials that you should not miss out on when it comes to your wedding songs, along with some other wedding ideas for using music at your wedding.

Have music prepared for these parts of the wedding: the ceremony (processional, recessional, interlude), cutting the cake, first dance for the couple, and bridal reception party, and also at the end of the event when you are thanking your guests and handing out wedding favors. At the ceremony, generally there is no background music except when the bride is walking down the aisle and on the interlude. A professional wedding singer can perform songs for you or have the choir play and sing those songs for you. Some opt for the more dramatic and romantic feel of live music. There will definitely be goosebumps especially when the church choir’s songs are very moving and emotional.

On the reception, play soft music as the people come in and take their seats. This is generally not the time for loud music as this is the time where people mingle and greet each other. Make it easier for them so they will not struggle against the music. Make the music conversation friendly. During cake cutting portion of the wedding, play the favorite music of the couple. Make it a fast song as a few laughs may be shared during this part of the reception. On the first dance, this is normally a romantic song that brings a special meaning for the couple.

At the party, this is of course the time where loud party music signals the culmination of the happiness of the couple.

Have family closely monitor the music played when you are renting from a special lights and sound provider. In one major mishap, the song “Broken Vow” was played during the reception. Imagine the horror of those who noticed that a song about breaking up and cheating is playing on the background. Get their playlist and unsure that they bring the exact CDs with them.

When all is settled, all there is left for you to do is relax, and enjoy your big day. Share smiles with your family and friends as romantic music helped lighten up the spirit of everyone in the room.
