Instructions on How to Properly Set a Dining Table for Dinner

Dinner is that time of the day where families and friends can share small talk, or have serious conversations. Over a meal, people are more relaxed and receptive. But in todays modern life, people rarely get the opportunity to have dinner meals together. Mostly on weekends, people spend the rest of the week having meals at the office table, cafeteria, drive thrus or delivery.
When you get the chance to have a dinner with the family or loved ones, make it more special by setting up a formal dinner table that will impress everyone.

A complete dinner table set should be composed of the following:
Glasses and Cups: Water glass, wine glass, and coffee cup
Forks: salad fork, dinner fork, and dessert fork,
Plates and Bowls: dinner plate with salad or soup bowl on it and bread plate with butter knife
Other Silverware: knife, small spoon, soup spoon

When placing dinner plates, they should be at least one inch away from the edge of the table. This allows people to eat properly and not reach too far or too near for their food. If the plates you are using have designs, make sure that the design/print is at the right side of the person eating.

On the right side of the plate is where you should place the knife. Remember that the blades should always face inwards.

Next to it should be the tablespoon.

Found on the left side of the plate should be the fork.

If extra fork is needed, as well as spoons (whether for dessert, soup or salad), they should be placed next to the other forks or the other spoons.

For forks, remember that the tines should always be upwards when not in use.

Napkins can be plain or simple geometric design. As for folding, you can fold it in half or you may use any fancy folding technique.

You can place napkins on the dinner plate or you may place them on the left (where your other flatware are.

During dining, the formal etiquette is that silverwares are used from the outside in. This should also be followed of course with the silverware. The ones that will be used first should be farthest away from the person, while the last silverwares to be used are nearer the dinner plate.

A centerpiece is what some consider to complete a table set-up. Use candles, flowers, or fancy glass or ceramic figure to exude elegance on your dinner. Be a little playful and have toys or wrapped gifts that kids will notice and make it a conversational piece as well.

No need for a fancy restaurant, have a fancy dinner at home with an elegant table set-up. No need to buy any new items as you may have bought these items already or maybe you still have some wedding coasters given to you as gifts. Coasters can be good for drink glasses if they are carried into the living room.

It is important to have all items available on the dinner table. So as not to spoil the mood, by having to get up and get the shakers or extra fork, a little effort and a little love can make all the difference.
